Modern Antiques: the Rubens Earrings in Aquamarine & Silver

Modern Antiques: the Rubens Earrings in Aquamarine & Silver

$275.00

Unlike rings, which have been an adornment mainstay for millennia, earrings have repeatedly disappeared from and reappeared in jewelry boxes over the centuries.

There is a certain type of earring that I particularly strongly associate with their resurgence in Europe in the 1500-1600s - a small gold hoop with a suspended baroque pearl. You will frequently see them featured in paintings of elegant women from the era, such in the many portraits Peter Paul Rubens painted of his wife, Isabella Brant.

As the pigments in painting of that era degrade, at times the diaphanous veil of color used to paint a pearl begins to resemble a translucent gem.

Each set of earrings is one of a kind, handcrafted in sterling silver and beautiful, smoothly polished aquamarine. They are just over 1 inch long.
