Antique Etruscan Revival Mosaic Brooch

Antique Etruscan Revival Mosaic Brooch

$1,275.00

This fine Antique Victorian brooch features a central micro-mosaic panel depicting a pair of doves, surrounded by intricate Etruscan revival scrollwork in 18K gold, with further floral micro-mosaic designs on either terminal.

In the 19th century, the discovery of rich archaeological sites in Italy, Greece and Egypt led to the rise in popularity of historic revival styles, such as Etruscan revival, emulating the treasures unearthed during these excavations. These pieces were often made in Italy for wealthy travelers visiting the continent as part of the Grand Tour.

Birds, such as the pair of turtle doves pictured in this brooch, were symbols of love and devotion.

The piece is in very good condition consistent with age. Some small sections of micro-mosaic missing,  as well as a file mark and a knick on the back of the brooch, as pictured.

Although unmarked, the brooch tests as 18K gold and measures about 50 long by 22 mm wide, weighing 5.6g.
